Foreigners staying in Japan for more than three months on residential statuses such as employment or study must complete various procedures.
Residence Card(Zairyu Card)
Residence Card is issued at major airports or the municipal office of your residence after entering Japan.
It is an identification provided to those who do not hold Japanese nationality and will stay in Japan for a certain period.
Resident Registration
You must register your residence at the municipal office of your living area within 14 days of entering the country.
Individual Number(My Number)
After registering as a resident, an Individual Number will be issued, and a notification letter or Individual Number Card will be sent to you.
This number is used for tax and social security procedures.
National Health Insurance
You are obligated to enroll in National Health Insurance if you stay in Japan for over three months, and reductions in medical expenses can be applied.
Employees and public servants enroll in “Social Insurance” through your employer, with the premium shared between the employer and the employee.
Self-employed individuals or the unemployed enroll in “National Health Insurance” at the municipal office and pay the premiums individually.
Public Pension System
It is obligated to enroll in Public Pension System for individuals aged 20 to 59, regardless of nationality.
Employees and public servants enroll in “Employees’ Pension” through your employer, with the premium shared between the employer and the employee.
Self-employed individuals or the unemployed enroll in “National Pension” at the municipal office and pay the premiums individually.
Bank Account
Bank account is necessary for salary deposits from your employer and for paying rent.
(For foreigners who don’t have a personal seal, it is recommended to use Japan Post Bank or online banks, as they do not require an personal seal for opening an account.)
Mobile Phone
Mobile phone number is required not only for communication but also for using various services.
