When relocating in Japan, various procedures are required before and after the move.
Resident Registration
You need to complete the Resident Registration transfer both before and after moving.
If you are moving to a different city, submit a Moving-Out Notification to the municipal office of your current address within 14 days before your move.
And after moving to your new address, submit a Moving-In Notification to the municipal office of your new location within 14 days.
Your new address will be recorded on the back of your residence card.
If you are moving within the same city, there is no need to submit a Moving-Out Notification.
However, remember to submit a Notification of Address Change within 14 days of your move.
Utilities
The available utility services such as electricity, gas, water, and internet may vary depending on the region or residential building.
Make sure to check whether you can transfer your current services, or if you need to cancel and set up new contracts.
Mail Forwarding
Japan Post offers a service where mail sent to your old address will be automatically forwarded to your new address for one year.
You can apply for this on their website or at a post office.
Various Services
Ensure you update your registered information for services such as your bank, credit cards, and mobile phone.
This can generally be done through their websites or at a branch store.
Driver’s License
If you have a driver’s license, update the address on your license card at your local police station or driver’s license center after moving.
